I am ready to argue that the CPUSA, between 1945 and 1965, despite its lousy politics, and despite the fact that it accomplished nonthing in the short run, made the 1960s possible. I would also argue that the work the SP & the CP did in thed 1920s, though accomplishing nothing, was essential to the accomplishments of the late '30s. And note that the accomplishments of the '30s were only after partial recovery had begun and in general hope was rising. Lou is poisoned by his SWP experiene and hence cannot learn from the '60s. If you look over the last 200 years you will find that most of the time the left was impotent -- but that there were perioss when grat victories were won. We are impotent NOW.
