The press says: "The commercial deals he announced include the purchase of 33 737s from Boeing by India's SpiceJet Airlines; the Indian military's plans to buy aircraft engines from General Electric; and preliminary agreement between Boeing and the Indian Air Force on the purchase of 10 C17s.
For the most part, the deals were already pending, but the White House contends Obama's visit to India helped finalize them. Officials said the deals would support 53,670 U.S. jobs, but it was not clear how many, if any, new jobs would be created as a result." Ignoring whether the jobs are "new" or not, how many person years would you guess that 53,670 figure corresponds to? That is, suppose 1000 workers are now working 40 hours a week and now they work 50 hours a week, let's call that "creating 250 jobs" even if no new people are employed. In that sense, and of course ignoring any increased imports to the US, how many jobs would you guess will be created? I figure even if it's 15,000, surely a wild overestimate, that represents one-tenth of one percent of the 15 million unemployed. So, Obama needs to make about 500 of these trips to cut the unemployment rate in half. -- Robert Naiman Policy Director Just Foreign Policy www.justforeignpolicy.org [email protected] Urge Congress to Support a Timetable for Military Withdrawal from Afghanistan http://www.justforeignpolicy.org/act/feingold-mcgovern _______________________________________________ pen-l mailing list [email protected] https://lists.csuchico.edu/mailman/listinfo/pen-l
