Studying the system as a system of unequal nations and studying the system
as a system of global inequality (that is looking a the gaps between the
global rich and the global poor) are quite difficult given
the nationalist assumptions of the social contractarian tradition that has
dominated political thought from Hobbes to Rawls as Amartya Sen has shown in
the Idea of Justice (Milanovic also
offers a critique of Rawls) and the nationalist assumptions of economics and
political economy as Stephen Marglin has shown.
