As I read them, I kept thinking of Detroit as (potentially) an inner
Cuba (or Venezuela) in the heart of the U.S. It would take some unity
among leftists there, while developing their vision of Motown as a
society centered on its own people -- on their health and education;
on their children, women, youth, etc.; on rebuilding their
manufacturing on a higher technological and human base, on overcoming
the state and federal obstacles to develop international partnerships,
sending young students to learn medicine in Cuba, tapping Venezuela's
oil, China or Russia's resources, etc.
