To start off, this is a spoiler alert. The passage cited below comes from the final pages of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, the first in a series of 3 manuscripts turned into a Swedish publisher in 2004, just before the author died. If you plan to see the excellent Swedish movie based on the novel or the novel itself, be forewarned that this passage amounts to a kind of surprise ending. When I read it today, I was struck by how much it anticipated the collapse in 2008, even though the triggering event was the exposure of a Swedish financier running a criminal enterprise rather than subprime mortgages. It would have been lovely to see Stieg Larsson commenting on all this, as well as the Wikileaks maelstrom. Computer hacking plays a major role in this novel, as well as the author’s leftwing sympathies.
