In Holland, the SP http://international.sp.nl/ proved that a populist approach to politics can generate a highly successful, wellfunded leftwing political party, although they often deny themselves that they are "populist" but merely follow the "mass line" principle.
The method is basically simple: survey your constituency to understand the mentality, and pick an issue (1) where there is a legitimate grievance, the validity of which no one can deny (2) where you have a good chance of winning, with an observable result. Then concentrate all your resources on this issue, and carry on until you win. Consolidate your support base organizationally on the basis of your win.
