The M1911 automatic pistol, designed by Utah-born gunmaker John M. Browning, joins the honeybee, the Dutch Oven, and the cutthroat trout on the state's list of official symbols, in a move that even supporters say is badly timed, given January's mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona. "People say the timing is terrible, and I admit the timing is terrible," said State Rep. Carl Wimmer, the former SWAT officer who proposed the new symbol. Still, Wimmer told CNN, "this firearm does not represent an implement of death. It represents an implement of freedom." In any case, Arizonans aren't likely to take offense: Copper State lawmakers are already working to have the Colt single-action revolver declared their own state's official handgun.
