Louw's Pax Americana -- excellent book -- makes the case that the US already 
had more power at the time, but until WW II, the British were able to 
outmaneuver the US diplomatically, corroborating what Paul said.

If one reads books written just after 1918 the British Empire is still seen as 
the dominant world power, but it had already made huge financial losses, it was 
defeat by Japan in the second wold war which destroted it.
