Perhaps he believes in the policies he follows. He got what he wanted 
from the Republican opposition. I don't know what "averting eyes" from 
history means. History is whatever happens -- not some ideal of human 
happiness. It seems to me that in terms of policy objectives, the Obama 
administration is/will be as successful as the Bush Administration. That 
is not intended as irony. One measures the success of a policy in terms 
of the aims of those making it. Bush and now Obama have certinly beaten 
the left liberals who are weping so.
