By all means, people can go ahead and fuck Marx... as well as Freud and Einstein if they wish. Who am I after all to tell anybody how to conduct his sexual life? But we should show some respect for logic. If you read carefully my post, you'll see that the possibility of a collapse of human civilization as a result of the *inherent* and *necessary* self-destructive tendencies of *capitalism* is never excluded. In fact, Marx and -- more sharply -- Engels acknowledged it *explicitly*. So, you are not saying anything that Marx would not have endorsed, since you note that it is *capitalism* that is mediating (and wrecking) our relationship with the rest of nature. My argument is with Carrol's rejection of attributing to Marx the claim that capitalism is inherently self-destructive, and self-destructive not in some accidental or superficial way, but in an essential and necessary way. I'm taking him to task, because some people seem to think that whenever Carrol makes one of his lapidary claims, he's uttering some profound Yoda-Master type of Truth; that, if it doesn't make sense to us, then it must be because *we* don't understand the subtlety and depth of his thoughts. I just don't think so. _______________________________________________ pen-l mailing list [email protected] https://lists.csuchico.edu/mailman/listinfo/pen-l
