Opinion: Free to Die By PAUL KRUGMAN Compassion is out of fashion among the G.O.P.'s base.
Full Story: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/16/opinion/krugman-free-to-die.html?emc=tnt&tntemail0=y Most of the media try to ignore Ron Paul and his enthusiastic backers, but PK attacks them, among other things pointing to the contradiction between what their hero von Hayek said and what they say. Though they call themselves "libertarians," what most of them seem to be is a movement of organized NIMBYism. Or the "I've got mine" movement: I've got mine, so give me more -- and tax & regulate those other guys (the unwashed masses). This differs from the traditional GOP, which often uses the money libertarians' rhetoric. (I'd guess that Boehner's recent "liberate the economy" speech fits here.) The traditional "chamber of commerce" GOP -- and most of the DP -- is more a matter of "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine." If you support my proposal to build that freeway that helps my bottom line, then I'll support your plan to beef up the police Red Squad, etc. -- Jim Devine / "Segui il tuo corso, e lascia dir le genti." (Go your own way and let people talk.) -- Karl, paraphrasing Dante. _______________________________________________ pen-l mailing list [email protected] https://lists.csuchico.edu/mailman/listinfo/pen-l
