i think this is a great post that really gets to the heart of the
matter in terms of the left. when i want to talk about economic issues
with people and even activists i know, i get responses like " you just
turn everything into economics" or " i don't [and am implicitly not
trying to] understand what you're talking about". then they go into a
tirade about socially constructed phenomenon and reactionaries. not to
say that those issues aren't important, just that economics is
obviously important too. it's become especially bizarre in the last
couple years as macroeconomics has obviously come to the forefront in
activist issues. it is my contention that critical (as in comparing
multiple, contrasting point of views) economic seminars are badly
needed on the left and that, at the very least activists, need to be
able to discuss economic issues with some degree of sophistication and
the ability to combat neoclassical and other conflicting arguments.
"wall street got bailed out, we got sold out" is a great slogan but
can't consist of your understanding of economics when you are
participating in a discussion of grievances and possible solutions. i
realize this is preaching to the choir, but i felt the need to say
it...
