I hope they redefine this bullshit to realistic levels and work up a cost of living figure that is more realistic and acceptible---knowing full well they won't.
We were working on a sliding fee rate this afternoon. The poverty line here for 1 person is 10.8k. The best you can find a studio for is 1000/m. even doubling up is barely tolerable unless you get a substidity, and these are handed out once a year in a lottery. It's just bullshit. Low income are already living at serious `austerity' levels. Women with kids can usually find temporary shelter housing, but single men are pretty much fucked. There is a whole shifting around crowd who live in their car. In the morning they find someplace to park and start working through the garbage for pennies on recycling. By the time the city recycle trucks come around there is almost nothing. There is another crowd of old guys with beat-up pick-ups who have regular routes through light industry and small business to pick up cardboard. The real kings of this trade are the metal dealers, some of whom hang at the dump. They were ready to cream if I had a load of powerwheel chair parts, dropping to their knees to finish off... This is one fucked up country.
