I am not a fan of either one and would eliminate funding for both in a
heartbeat.

Nonetheless I think it is an especially damning indication of how
messed up US policy in Egypt is, that even these groups cannot operate
under the rule of the US-financed Egyptian military.

Recall that during the Salvadoran civil war, in which the government
was backed, armed and financed by the US, two USAID employees were
assassinated by US-financed Salvadoran government death squads.

I thought that was a particularly strong example of how messed up US policy was.

I see this similarly.

It is another indication that US "foreign aid" needs to be hit with a
two-by-four.
