2008: Laptops lost like hotcakes at airports http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/147739/laptops_lost_like_hot_cakes_at_us_airports.html --- The FTC recommends people treat laptops "like cash." Like a wad of money, a laptop in public view -- like the backseat of the car or at the airport -- could attract unwanted attention. The FTC also recommends using tracking devices like Absolute Software's LoJack, which can help track down a stolen laptop by reporting its location once it is connected to the Internet. Lenovo last week announced it would offer the LoJack option in its upcoming ThinkPad SL series laptops. Attaching bells and whistles that sound off after detecting laptop motion could also minimize the chances of laptop theft, the FTC says. Laptop theft is fairly prevalent in the U.S., said Mike Spinney, a spokesman for Ponemon Institute. In a study conducted by the institute, 76 percent of companies surveyed reported losing one or more laptops each year, of which 22 percent were due to theft or other criminal mischief. --- 2009: http://www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/piles-of-stolen-airport-bags-found-in-us-couples-house-1814520.html http://www.myfoxphilly.com/dpp/news/local_news/video-shows-airport-baggage-incidents-010512 ---- Updated: Thursday, 05 Jan 2012, 5:09 PM EST Published : Thursday, 05 Jan 2012, 4:36 PM EST PHILADELPHIA - Surveillance video shown in a Philadelphia court on Thursday depicts a former airport baggage handler going through passengers' luggage at Philadelphia International Airport. At the hearing, another baggage handler, Victor Soler, was found not guilty in the case. Soler and three other men were charged with stealing from suitcases while handling baggage for American Airlines in 2010. In the video released on Thursday, the handler who is not Soler is seen opening passengers' bag. The three defendants other than Soler pleaded guilty last year to theft and other related charges after they were arrested in November 2010.
