It was Vittorio Emanuele and Benito Mussolini who invented "Libya."
In all the many millennia of history Cyrenaica and Tripolitania were never parts of a single country--even under Rome. When the imperialists recreated "Libya" after 1945 the Cyrenaicans (including "King" Idriss) were forced to accept undesired unity with Tripolitania and the Fezzan. and this was before the great oil fields had been discovered, as far as they (but not the Seven Sisters) knew... So what grounds has anybody outside Cyrenaica to object if the Cyrenaicans, who made the revolution, demand autonomy tantamount to independence?
