I wished that had been the case.  I had no political background when I came.  
My friends and I back in New Castle, PA knew more about the nearby Mafia 
Factions than formal politics, although the two worlds were very intertwined.

I knew Tom Hayden a bit, but did not care for him.  Al Haber seemed far more 
interesting.  The Fair Play for Cuba group was very active.  The only Civil 
Right activity that I recall was a march in front of Woolworth.

When Michael enrolled at Michigan I was in my second year as a teaching
fellow. Probably there had been about a one out of 50 chance that he would
have ended up in one of my freshman comp sectins! Michigan was a fairly
exciting place in the late '50s.
