PASSENGERS Baquedano explained that the people in question on the return trip were passengers and when they were heading upstream in the Río Patuca they passed a motorboat of drug traffickers who were being pursued by helicopter by agents of the National Police and the Drug Enforcement Agency of the United States (DEA). "The drug traffickers' motorboat did not have lights on and the passenger boat did, so it was a visible target that the agents could shoot at from their helicopter," he stated. He said that the drug traffickers abandoned their boat and fled in the direction of Barra Patuca. He stated that as a result of the incident, the furious residents burned down four houses because they believe that the authorities from Ahuas and from the Moskitia called in the helicopter. "These raids were carried out irresponsibly because supposedly the people participating in them are specialists who are going to act against drug traffickers and not against innocent people," added the mayor. ALARMED He asserted that they are extremely alarmed because they now live with the both threat of the anti-drug raids that kill innocent people, and the threat of the drug traffickers who want to operate freely. "We request that the case be seriously investigated, because four people died, including two pregnant women," stated Baquedano. For his part, Congressman Wood Grawell Maylo asserted that the police raids are lamentable because they were carried out irresponsibly. "It was with great indignation that I heard [director of the National Police] Commissioner José Ricardo Ramírez Del Cid say that the raid was a success because two drug traffickers died; in this attack it was humble citizens who died," he said. The Congressman from Gracias a Dios presented a motion yesterday in the National Congress demanding that the facts be clarified, because now they want to make people think that the dead and injured people were drug traffickers, which the Congressman denied. The spokesperson for the Armed Forces, Jeremías Arévalo, stated that the military did not participate in the raid in the Moskitia, since it was a police raid. Los hechos ocurrieron la madrugada del viernes anterior cuando un helicóptero con policías hondureños y estadounidenses abrieron fuego contra una embarcación en el río Patuca, en el lugar conocido como Paplaya, creyendo que eran narcotraficantes. En este percance fallecieron los jóvenes Emerson Martínez; Chalo Brock Wood; así como las mujeres Candelaria Tratt Nelson; y Juana Banegas, quienes estaban embarazadas. En el ataque también resultaron heridos Hilda Lezama de Eulopio; Wilmer López; Lucio Adán y Melanio Eulopio. De acuerdo al alcalde de Ahuas, Lucio Baquedano, la embarcación atacada salió la madrugada del viernes anterior de la barra de El Patuca con dirección al municipio de Ahuas a dejar unos buzos. PASAJEROS Baquedano explicó que de regreso se vinieron como pasajeros estas personas y cuando iban aguas arriba por el río Patuca se encontraron con la lancha de los narcotraficantes que eran perseguidos desde un helicóptero por agentes de la Policía Nacional y del Buró Federal de Antidrogas de Estados Unidos (DEA). “La lancha de los narcos no llevaba luz y la de los pasajeros sí iba con luz, por lo que fue blanco visible para los agentes que disparaban desde el helicóptero”, expresó. Manifestó que los traficantes de drogas abandonaron la embarcación y huyeron con dirección a la barra de El Patuca. Expuso que debido al incidente los habitantes del lugar enardecidos incendiaron cuatro casas porque creen que las autoridades de Ahuas y de la Mosquitia llamaron el helicóptero. “Estos operativos se practicaron de forma irresponsable porque se supone que las personas que participan son especialistas que van actuar contra los narcotraficantes y no contra personas sanas”, señaló el edil. ALARMADOS Aseguró que ellos están alarmados porque ahora tienen la amenaza de los operativos porque matan gente humilde, y de los narcotraficantes porque quieren operar libremente. “Nosotros pedimos que se investigue el caso a fondo porque murieron cuatro personas, entre ellas dos mujeres embarazadas”, destacó Baquedano. Por su parte, el diputado Wood Grawell Maylo, expuso que los referidos operativos son lamentables porque se ejecutaron de manera irresponsable. “Escuché con mucha indignación al director de la Policía, José Ricardo Ramírez Del Cid, decir que el operativo fue exitoso porque murieron dos narcotraficantes, en este ataque murieron humildes ciudadanos”, aseguró. El parlamentario presentó en la sesión de ayer del Congreso Nacional una moción para que se esclarezcan los hechos porque ahora quieren hacer creer que las personas muertas y heridas se dedican al tráfico de drogas, lo que desmintió el parlamentario de Gracias a Dios. El vocero de las Fuerzas Armadas, Jeremías Arévalo, dijo que la institución castrense no participó en el operativo de la Mosquitia, porque fue una operación efectuada por la Policía. TRASIEGO De acuerdo a las autoridades, la Mosquitia es uno de los pasos más usados por los narcotraficantes para transportar droga por los quineles y abundantes ríos y quebradas en la zona. LA MOCION El diputado presentó una moción ante el pleno del Congreso para que en término de 15 días las Fuerzas Armadas, la Policía y el Ministerio Público ofrezcan un informe detallado de los hechos que ocurrieron en esa zona.
