To follow up on Carroll's point about the 1970s, I recommend Jefferson
Cowie's book STAYIN' ALIVE -- the subtitle tells it all -- The 1970s and
the last days of the working class.

Right now, the divide and conquer strategy (thank you Scott Walker) seems
to be working with enough white workers blinded by Obama's color or the
"unfairness" of some unionized workers making "too much" (I met one of
those Tea Party types on a plane -- complained that her own mother had made
$65 an hour as a "factory worker" -- and opined "that's just too much") to
allow Scott Walker and other union-busters to get away with it.

(we shall see what happens in Wisconsin ...)
