My favorite of this genre is Morris, Ian. 2010. Why The West Rules -- For Now: The Patterns of History, and What They Reveal About the Future (New York: Farrar, Straus, and Giroux).
Warning: He ends with stupid gibes a socialism, but I have never encountered a book like this. He does not give any single cause. His strength is that he works with teams of historians, anthropologists and physical scientists.
