(This is a bit vague: Who are "these guys"?] 

The columnist Joseph Krutch, a conservative liberal, recognized decades ago
that "nation" (as opposed to "the public" or "the people) referred to the
ruling class, and hence the "national interest" of Greece is identical to
the "National Interest" of Germany which in turn refers not to the German
people but to the ECB. We live in an Empire of Capital, not a world of
national empires -- read Ellen Meiksins Wood to see what that means. 

So "these guys" do it because it is in the national interest as _they_ see
it. And they are of course correct. Capital is reality until collective
action changes reality.
