My high school boyfriend and current bridge partner is a genius. Quantifiably
so.... He's a senior scientist at Berkeley labs, Ph.D. in physics & when we
were in school he was the one who could ace any math or science test without
doing homework.

He's also convinced that unions are a major threat to education, that
competition breeds excellence, that society is divided into winners and losers,
and that socialism is the tyranny of the losers.

Now Carrol says that this man bears no responsibility for his opinions, that
his opinions are a matter of capitalist relations. But I can't shake the notion
that he is responsible, and his general attitude toward mankind makes me want
to vomit.

But perhaps, I am equally guilty: though I refuse to become his mistress; I
continue to play bridge with him because a good bridge partner is hard to find.

As I understand the common use of the word, being an ideologue is not
a character flaw. An ideologue can have good intentions. Most do. (I
also know many of them, having some as good friends.)
