Another addition to Porter's reasons for the decline of labor unions
in the U.S.: starting in the late 1970s, "deregulation," i.e., the
abolition of government-sponsored cartels (the Interstate Commerce
Commission and the Civil Aeronautics Board), severely undermined
unions in trucking, airlines, etc. It's not just technological change,
Reaganism, and globalization.
