Fair enough, I guess. Every writer has to assume some baseline of
knowledge. I'll readily acknowledge that while I probably should have read
Wodehouse at some point, I can't remember ever doing so.

As for your "average reader" - well, I'm not sure "average" is exactly your
target demographic.
