Ota Benga was first brought to the US tobe gawked at at the St. Louis World's
Fair (the "Meet Me in St. Louie, Louie" fair). Benga was returned to Africa
after the fair but his family had been decimated by war and he was brought back
to the US, this time to the Bronx Zoo. Black religious leaders were incensed.

Today the Ota Benga Society is directed by Jacques Depelchin, visit prof at UC
Berkeley and author of Silences in African History.
