The New Yorker ran a great article some years ago precisely about this subject: Manhattan vs Suburb. Turns out that Manhattan is vastly more energy efficient and "green" than the suburbs. This is due to 1) public transit 2) use of energy in buildings ....I don't remember the rest. But it was one of the great New Yorker articles. Maybe I have a copy. But I think I tore it out and sent it to a friend.
