The article that Jim Devine posted about the recent American Economic
Association meeting says that a group of distinguished economists, eminently
qualified to speak on matters of economic policy, was organized by the U of
Chicago business school to discuss such policies. Presumably ideological
differences were apparent, as Paul Krugman noted. However, you get an idea of
the breadth of these differences when the article goes on to say this: "Among
them [the group] were University of Chicago’s Austan Goolsbee, a former Obama
administration adviser, on the left and Stanford University’s Caroline Hoxby
and Edward Lazear on the right." I guess it doesn't take much to be on the left
these days! Sort of like Chinese billionaires being in the Communist Party.
