I agree with Gar that a sane society would not use low-cost renewable energy to subsidize fossil fuel extraction and that therein lies the real problem. I'm not entirely convinced about the technical feasibility of wind and solar on the scale required to replace current wasteful and excessive levels of fossil fuel consumption. Waste is not merely endemic to late capitalism; it is its vital organ.
That last sentence may sound like an aphorism but it is not. It is the central premise of my argument, which is not the same as Marx's analysis of surplus value but in my view is compatible with it. My premise is that what Marx called "surplus value" is what neoclassical welfare economics calls "externalities" in the form of "uncompensated services" and "uncharged disservices" and that a fuller appreciation of the accumulation process can be gained by looking beyond the extension and intensification of direct labor services.
