the 1917 Espionage Act, the basis for most of
these cases, was written to go after people who compromised military
operations.
That is totally untrue. The Espionage Act was written to criminalize
dissent. Eugene V. Debs and many other socialist and anarchist
opponents of Wilson's imperial war were sent to jail and imprisoned
under it until a decent human being (a Republican, by the way) became
president and released them. What Obama is doing conforms to the
letter and is entirely in the spirit of Wilson's Espionage Act. It
befits a party whose heroes are Woodrow Wilson and Andrew Jackson.
