My free translation of a speech given yesterday by Aquiles Córdova, at
the inauguration of the National Spartakiad of Mathematics in
Tecomatlán, Puebla, Mexico:

"Today, math is at the service of those who distort science to oppress
the impoverished masses. ... They are using math to give an appearance
of scientificity to trickery that goes against the interest of the
disadvantaged, like the deceitful macroeconomic policies that
neoliberals are implementing in most countries hit by the crisis. And
workers are in no position to reject their trickery, to unmask the
hidden ideology, because they remain profoundly ignorant of the
mathematical sciences. This is why math is today a weapon of the
oppressors. ... We should study math most seriously, with a genuine
desire to appropriate it and turn it into an instrument to save the
planet from catastrophe and help those who have the least to free
themselves."
