In a departure from my norms, I wrote an article on Comanche Indians for CNS's upcoming special issue on indigenous peoples. I put a lot more work into it than my usual off the top of the noggin effort and would like to share it with as many people as possible. It gets into some interesting questions prompted by a recent book titled "Comanche Empire" that posits the Indians as hegemonic in the early to mid 19th century in Texas. It also looks as some rather nasty sociobiologically influenced crap about violence being intrinsic to Comanche society, pop culture, the war with Mexico that led to huge pieces of real estate being gobbled up by Washington, etc. So I clicked a link to the Taylor and Francis website to see how much it would cost to make the article "open access", assuming it would be $100 or so.
