I think that the purpose of austerity programs is to move more public assets to the control of capital. The UK has seen their commuter rail prices skyrocket since privatization and now their postal service has been privatized. The rich don't want to raise taxes because they would rather buy bonds with that money. High national debt gives the rich a safe place to park their assets. -- Ron
