Louis, you've got fine instincts when it comes to this part of the world, but once in a while there's a sour note:

I had high hopes that the South African Communist Party would turn out different. At least I can take solace that one of the party’s top leaders has never lost faith. Here’s Ronnie Kasrils from the June 23, 2013 Guardian: "What I call our Faustian moment came when we took an IMF loan on the eve of our first democratic election. That loan, with strings attached that precluded a radical economic agenda, was considered a necessary evil, as were concessions to keep negotiations on track and take delivery of the promised land for our people. Doubt had come to reign supreme: we believed, wrongly, there was no other option; that we had to be cautious, since by 1991 our once powerful ally, the Soviet union, bankrupted by the arms race, had collapsed. Inexcusably, we had lost faith in the ability of our own revolutionary masses to overcome all obstacles. Whatever the threats to isolate a radicalising South Africa, the world could not have done without our vast reserves of minerals. To lose our nerve was not necessary or inevitable. The ANC leadership needed to remain determined, united and free of corruption – and, above all, to hold on to its revolutionary will. Instead, we chickened out."

Sorry comrade, I'm reliably informed that this is an accurate reflection of SACP thinking about the former SACP leader Kasrils (who now veers pleasingly close to the independent left while not having quite yet been booted from the SACP or ANC):

SACP EC response to R. Kasrils and M. Jara

18 July 2013

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Eastern Cape Province finds responses of Mr. Ronnie Kasrils and Mr. Mazibuko Jara as published on the Daily Dispatch on 18 July 2013 quite misleading. We note their narrow attempt to escape from the core issues raised by our party.

We would like for the benefit of all democratic forces and broader South Africans remind everyone of what we are raising.

  1. As the "Democracy from Below" is raising an issue of transparency can they also be transparent and reveal to the South African people who is funding them to move up and down the country.
  2. As they are crying over accountability can they also share with everyone who they really account to as they claim to be genuine democrats.
  3. We are saying the issues they raise now as problems of this society, there is none of denying them.

The response by both men leading this business scheme leads much to be desired and actually reveals who they really are. They are failed business people who are now riding on challenges faced by South African to line their pockets. They are trying to pull wool over the eyes of the poor for their narrow selfish interests.

For Mr. Kasrils to claim that he was serving with Cdes Naledi Pandor and Trevor Manuel in the regime that denied the existence of HIV/Aids is quite mischievous and a desperate attempt to run away from the realities of the day.

What distinguishes Ministers Naledi Pandor and Trevor Manuel to Ronnie Kasrils is that they are part of the efforts by the African National Congress (ANC) to find resolutions to undeniable challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality faced by the people of our land, they are not standing from the sideways and throwing stones to the movement and yet claim to belong to this movement. Whilst he is busy grandstanding in front of cameras and throwing stones to our government they (Cde Pandor and Cde Manuel) are busy trying to find solutions with the ANC alliance.

Mr. Kasrils like any other individual suffering from "post power radicalism "is trying to fool everyone as if the problems of South Africa started when President Jacob Zuma ascended to the presidency when actually he and others presided over the most neo-liberal regime. They are failing to appreciate that this current leadership is trying to find solutions to the challenges of their own creation.

We are of the firm view that the leaders of this imperialist grouping should respond to the core issues we are raising and not attempt to shy away from them. We view what they are doing as defocusing us from realizing both the content and implementation of the radical second phase of the second transition.

People of South Africa should remain vigilant and reject any form of imperialist agents who masquerade as genuine democrats whilst they are rented to destabilize our country.
