You are making some rather sweeping assertions here. What does it mean for a bird to "understand" the results of something? In what way is a bird "surprised" by the hatching of an egg? And human beings are different how in this respect? Do not human mothers have a maternal instinct for nursing their babies that is exactly analogous to a bird's? -raghu.
