Each bitcoin is equivalent to a unique hard to compute number and each additional number takes more time to compute making them scarce which is perceived by the enthusiasts as valuable. Some of the bitcoin exchanges have been going bankrupt. There are hardware accelerators that can speed up the discovery process or computer viruses can steal computer time from the public to discover bitcoins. Bitcoins are attractive to the criminal element being outside the regulation of any government. On rt.com look at some of the Keiser reports on Bitcoin. -- Ron
