Krugman, of course, is only half right; the Democrats as well as the 
Republicans are committed to defending the oligarchy's interests. Wherever 
there are contested elections, there are typically two governing parties, one 
liberal and the other conservative, each equally committed to defending the 
capitalist system, differing only in the factions they represent at the top and 
support they draw from below. Because the liberal parties tend to be based on 
the urban working class and social movements, they are marginally more 
sensitive to social protest and social spending, but only insofar as these 
don't fundamentally alter the existing structure of power and property.
