I am baffled by this exchange. For nearly 70 years every single 'exercise'
(economic, military, political) of u.s. power beyond its own borders,
_regardless_ particular conditions, has been a terrible disaster for the people
affected by the intervention.

No u.s. leftists has a right to have any opinion whatever on the Middle East
(or the Ukraine or Syria or Libya) except the conviction that u.s. interfeen ce
there must be opposed.

ISIS is an Islamist movement which the Sunni population doesn't automatically
support. It's in the best interests of the US to work with mideast governments
to defeat ISIS. Much aid is going to the Islamist forces from Turkey, Saudi
Arabia, and Qatar and the US should put pressure on those governments to stop
giving that aid.

Again, not all Sunni are Islamist. The US has much more air power than Iraq,
Iran, and non-government militias have.

The US should also cooperate with Syria where ISIS is also active. You haven't
shown how direct US military action would be bad.
