I don't, for example, see how they could stop importing oil in less than
eight to twelve years. I can see Greece completely off fossil fuels in
fifteen years, which is an eyeblink in energy infrastructure terms. But
that is a hell of a long time in human terms to be miserable. Also where do
they get the capital for those infrastructure changes? I mean they do have
sufficient iron ore and an iron mining industry. They have a steel industry
too, but I don't know if it is big enough to turn the amount of ore into
steel they would need to make that transformation. I know a few things they
could do right away that would help. But someone would have do the analysis
I've done for energy for agriculture, and for all the major industries an
economy needs to survive. BTW here is an example of how something is pretty
straightforward that still is devasting in the transition. Greece
definitely has the land and the farmers and the resources for fertilizer
and such (especially if they go organic) to be food self-sufficient within
a year. But they are next importers of food because they have been unable
to compete with the EU farmers and (to a lesser extent) the heavily
subsidized US farmers. So if they couldn't import food, how would people
eat while they waited for crops to grow? Thats only a year wait, but a year
without food? The thing is, I'll bet that is solvable. Maybe a vegan diet
for year would feed everybody on the current crops, or a vegan except for
fish diet plus an increase in fishing. Somewhere in Greece, I'll bet there
is someone who knows the answer, and I hope the Greek government is in
contact with her.
