Carrol, There have been other cases recently of non-academics (politicians and businessmen) appointed to leadership positions in major universities (e.g. Purdue, Oklahoma), but this case is remarkable, probably utterly unique, for the violence with which this guy is being shoved down the throats of the faculty, staff and students. You should see the graphics in the survey cited in the below article to see just how hostile everyone is to this appointment. http://www.press-citizen.com/story/news/education/university-of-iowa/2015/09/02/ui-survey-harreld-viewed-least-qualified-ui-finalist/71581184/ -----------------snip IBM executive J. Bruce Harreld <http://www.press-citizen.com/story/news/education/university-of-iowa/2015/08/31/4th-ui-finalist-comes-largely-business-world/71448622/> is viewed among many in the University of Iowa community as the least qualified finalist for UI president, according to the results of an online survey released Wednesday morning. In a survey conducted by the UI chapter of the American Association of University Professors, only 1.8 percent of faculty and 2.6 percent of other respondents answered “yes” to the question of whether Harreld was qualified for the position. The other candidates — Oberlin President Marvin Krislov <http://www.press-citizen.com/story/news/education/university-of-iowa/2015/08/26/regents-name-first-four-finalists-ui-president/32391963/> , Tulane University Provost Michael Bernstein <http://www.press-citizen.com/story/news/2015/08/27/2nd-ui-finalist-michael-bernstein/32466439/> and Ohio State University Provost Joseph Steinmetz <http://www.press-citizen.com/story/news/education/2015/08/30/ohio-state-provost-named-uis-finalist-no-3/71415012/> — all had more than 90 percent of respondents view them as qualified, with Steinmetz being the highest. Harreld — who also has been an executive with Kraft Foods and the restaurant chain Boston Chicken — earned an MBA from Harvard Business School, where he taught as a senior lecturer from 2008 to 2014. During his public forum Tuesday, he said that, although he had no experience in university administration, he does have experience helping organizations go for “good to great” and from “great to great.” “This isn’t a question about whether a business man can lead a university,” said Katherine Tachau, a UI history professor and chapter president. “It’s about whether this particular businessman is qualified to lead the University of Iowa.” Please contact me privately if you want to know more. -raghu. > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] [mailto: > [email protected]] On Behalf Of raghu > Sent: Friday, September 04, 2015 4:48 PM > To: Progressive Economics > Subject: Re: [Pen-l] Fwd: Appointment of businessman Bruce Harreld as next > U of Iowa president upsets faculty | InsideHigherEd > > > http://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/education/university-of-iowa/2015/09/02/ui-survey-harreld-viewed-least-qualified-ui-finalist/71581184/ > > > On Fri, Sep 4, 2015 at 8:18 AM, Louis Proyect <[email protected]> wrote: > > > (Why not just make the U. of Iowa a wholly owned subsidiary of > IBM?) > > Come November, the University of Iowa will have a businessman with > little experience in academe at its helm -- and many faculty > members and > others in Iowa City aren’t happy about it. > > The Iowa Board of Regents on Thursday unanimously appointed former > IBM > senior vice president Bruce Harreld as Iowa’s next president, > despite > outspoken criticism of Harreld as lacking the necessary > qualifications > to lead a university. > > Harreld was one of four publicly announced finalists for the > position > and the only one without experience in higher education > administration. > He is a consultant who formerly worked as an executive at IBM, > Kraft > General Foods and Boston Market Company restaurants.
