Boeing illustrates the interpenetration of American and Chinese capitalism as well as the contradictions of that relationship. Access to China’s huge market and low-cost workforce has required the dominant foreign multinationals to enter into joint ventures and transfer their technology to Chinese firms who may one supplant them. More likely, they will continue to merge their operations and ownership and find other ways to collaborate, as Boeing anticipates will happen with Comac, its rising rival aerospace manufacturer in China.
