Most debates over whether the SU or the PRC was or was not socialist show
that even in discussing the past it is easy to fall into crystal-ball
gazing: all those debates rest on the assumption that (a) it is possible
know what socialism will be if and when it is achieved in the future, (b)
that the correct recipe for that future is available, and (c) that any
nation in the 20th-c had only to follow that recipe correctly to be
"socialist." And since the SU and the PRC did not imitate that mystical
recipe when they easily could their failure to be "socialist" (which is
true) illustrates that they were therefore (and for evil reasons) capitalist
-- which is utter nonsense.
