A characteristically shallow, ignorant, ahistorical, Whiggish
observation on the part of Mr T. The "tenth century -- or the
thirteenth?" As if the two had any more in common than the seventeenth
century and the twentieth.

One feels that he was writing rather at random, for an audience of smug
semi-educated early twentieth-century believers in 'progress'.

As always, there is nothing more quickly dated than modernity.
