of course. In fact, "invading and occupying a country" (which also happened with 
Kosovo, Haiti, etc.) is a return to the old ways, before neocolonialism (which relies 
on informal domination, as with the IMF). But my point is that the US may _lose_ the 
war in Iraq, which would be a blow against the empire.
 
BTW, as with the Vietnam war, it's quite possible for both sides to lose.
