Right now (as I write even) the Canadian Supreme Court is starting
hearings on a "reference" about same-sex marriages.

We use "references": a process where the legislative body asks the court
that if it enacts a certain act, will that act be legal per the
constitution. (It is an economic efficiency measure.) The U.S. does not
use this.

Right now, as I write, the Supreme Court of Canada (which has just added
two new members, both women, making the balance 5 males and 4 females)
is hearing a reference on what marriage is. Lots of intervener opinions
on what marriage is being heard.

The most interesting idea presented was that marriage itself should be
abolished... or, at least, grandfathered.

Civil unions are more logical -- and capitalist, if you will. (Who cares
what you do or how you live, the only thing that matters is whether you
do your task.)

Marriage is fine for those that read a religious text... but who really
cares? Keep all the tax burdens and responsibilities, but get rid of the
left-over crap from the church safety-net era. (Which I would have
supported in its time.) We have a new safety net: government.

Ken.
