Also, social welfare measures on the state level such as workmen's comp and mothers' pensions (the precedessor of AFDC) + the city manager system to reduce corruption/end control of ethnic urban political machines + direct election of the senate (previously done by state legislatures) + the progressive income tax+ plus a variety of antitrust measures (Sherman Anti Trust Act--1890, Clayton Act barring interlocking directorates -1902). Much of this was done to eliminate the most egregious features of early 20th century capitalism and make it a smaller target for the left--hence Theodore Roosevelt's criticism of the `greed and purblind folly of the rich'
