Regarding Paul's note in inequality, many non-measured factors exist.  
Executive perqs --
private jets & the like -- are not counted.  Yes, they are not a great portion 
of GDP, but
still.  On the other side, the poor get hit with all sorts of fees & higher 
costs [eg,
interest & insurance] & lower quality of consumers goods [no supermarkets in 
very poor neighborhoods].
