Charles' answer is half-right: it wasn't Meaney and the AFL-CIO that was a sect as much as their intellectual brains trust, the Social Democrats USA (which helped spawn neoconservatism) and before that Jay Lovestone and his ilk. They were often creatures of teh CIA -- or critics of the CIA from the right. JD
