Point of View: Challenging Perspectives on Current Issues
Richard Lichtman, Professor, The Wright Institute, Berkeley Marx and Ideology
What is ideology? How does ideology support and challenge contemporary capitalism? Lichtman will discuss Marx's theory of ideology and show how Marxs understanding of the role of ideology developed over time. He will explore common motifs in Marxs work and show how Marxs more developed theory of ideology takes account of how ideology reflects capitalism as it appears in daily life but obscures the deeper realities of capitalist exploitation and alienation.
Richard Lichtman is a professor at The Wright Institute in Berkeley, a graduate school that trains future therapists. He was a founder of the journal Socialist Revolution and has taught Hegel and Marx at UC Berkeley and other Bay Area universities. One of his books is entitled The Production of Desire: The Integration of Psychoanalysis into Marxist Theory. He is in the process of developing a school that will offer a Psy.D. degree based on the Frankfurt Schools work in critical theory.
