>>No. But then just a year ago Gallup reported that 78 percent of Americans
believe in angels. Americans tend to not see things that do exist and to see things that don't exist -- warning signs of a tenuous grasp of reality. I don't think it does much from a communications standpoint to just go along with the public's state of denial and its fanciful view of America's global benevolence.<< Comment Astonishing figure. It is surprising that 22% of the population does not believe in angels that everyone else know to exist. What would be interesting is to define or pin down the meaning of angels, according to various population groups.
I don't necessarily believe that all the angels believers view angels as people with wings on their shoulder, or more accurately white people flying around the heavens or white pudgy looking babies with wings and halo's over their heads. I seem to recall that angels as a concept is bound up with messages or emissaries or messengers of the Lord or bearers good news.
What actually is being expressed by this meaning of belief in angels?
There has always been a strong fascists like tendency in American history and politics. The guy in small town Anywhere USA simply does not really care about the destruction of others due to the cultivation of the concept of the "other" for several centuries. People in our country know that bombs are being dropped on "others" and their children and it has no material consequence to their daily living that they can perceive or understand as a sign to stop the bombing. Many believe it is good and God urging to kill a lots of people, provided they are the "other."
Then again millions believed that slavery was God given and God ordained in the American Union. Some believed it was important to support and uphold the law and the law upheld slavery. Yet, the Church spilt into hostile political movements for and against slavery and the slave system was overthrown and the law was broken. Why should it be any different today?
And people understand very well that Bush Jr., expresses a fascists - militarists, current in politics, even if the government if not outright fascists. The American peoples are calling for fascism on themselves because they believe it to be a solution to society change and many are in for a rude wakening. More prisons and jail is the answer to domestic uneasiness and those identified as "the others."
Joe Average does not have to be won over to anything, merely neutralized.
