both objective class status and subjective class feelings, attitudes,
and ideologies are relevant to the historical process (and class
struggle), so that both L. Althusser and E.P. Thompson seem relevant.
But people wouldn't have class-tinged attitudes if it weren't for the
existence of objective class categores.
